What is Cold Laser Therapy?
Cold laser therapy, also known as low level laser therapy (LLLT), is a therapeutic technique that uses light to stimulate cell activity. During the procedure, a clinician uses a handheld device resembling a flashlight to deliver a concentrated beam of light into the skin. The light emits no heat, as it focuses specific wavelengths designed to reach a few centimeters into the skin.
The light stimulates cells to promote healing by increasing circulation and reducing inflammation. This healing process is sometimes called photobiostimulation. Depending on the target area, cold laser therapy may be used to eliminate pain or swelling, reduce spasms, and increase functionality.
It is used across a wide variety of joint, muscle, circulatory, neural, and inflammatory conditions. For instance, cold laser therapy can reduce the pain associated with arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and tendonitis. It is also effective in treating pain in the back, neck, and knee, among others.
A typical session only takes 8-15 minutes. Your doctor will personalize your treatment plan based on your specific condition, which may include several cold laser therapy sessions.
As a non-surgical procedure requiring minimal recovery time, it is a popular alternative to more invasive therapies. It is not typically used as a first line treatment, but rather as part of a comprehensive treatment plan as determined by your physician.
