What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
The median nerve is a neural pathway that runs from your forearm into your hand. It controls the sensations you feel in your palm, thumb, fore, middle, and ring fingers. The median nerve passes through your wrist via a small channel called the carpal tunnel.
The tendons surrounding the carpal tunnel can become inflamed and the bones misaligned creating pressure on your median nerve. The resulting pain and irritation is known as “carpal tunnel syndrome.”
Tasks involving repetitive motion and flexing of the wrist are known to contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a common condition among carpenters, cashiers, people who type a lot, and assembly line workers. Typically, the discomfort is noticed in a person’s dominant hand, but both hands can be affected.
Recognizing the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Take note if you are experiencing the following symptoms:
- Numbness, tingling, or discomfort on the palm side of your fingers
- The pain radiates from your wrist through your forearm to your elbow
You might first notice symptoms at night, while sleeping, or first waking up. It may start as a mild numbness, but it can progress to a persistent discomfort.
If you are experiencing these symptoms, we recommend you come in for a consultation. Make an appointment online anytime.
