What are Bursitis and Tendonitis?
Your joints contain small fluid-filled sacs called bursae. They act as cushions to prevent bones, muscles, and tendons from rubbing into one another. Sometimes, a slight misalignment causes uneven wear and tear of the joint. Repeated stress on the bursae can cause inflammation, a painful condition known as bursitis. Most often, bursitis occurs in the shoulder, elbow, or hip, but some people experience it in the knees, heel, or big toe.
Your risk of developing bursitis increases as you age. Gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes are also contributing factors. Athletes and laborers are especially susceptible to bursae irritation because the repetitive motions they perform put extra stress on their joints.
Tendonitis is similar, but the inflammation occurs in the tendons that connect muscles to bone. Muscles with tightness or trigger points can cause increased stress on the tendons and can eventually lead to tendonitis.
