Ankle sprains

Roll Over Your Ankle? Feel A “Pop” Followed By Sudden Weakness?

Ankle sprains are not only painful, they can keep you off your feet for weeks.

What are Ankle Sprains?

Ankle sprainsYour ankle is a dynamic joint, supporting the entire weight of your body and propelling you forward when you walk. It’s comprised of a dense network of ligaments, which connect the bones of your leg and foot with the muscles that move them. This high tension role requires ligaments to be very tough and flexible.

Ankle sprains are common sports injuries. They tend to strike when an athlete’s foot stays locked in position while he turns or his momentum carries him forward. Ankle sprains can happen in day-to-day life as well. Uneven surfaces, like an old sidewalk or a hole in the yard can catch you off guard. When this happens, the ligaments of the ankle stretch too far and develop a small tear.

Once sprained, your ankle may be difficult to move or support any weight. During your examination, the doctor may perform additional tests to rule out a broken bone.

  • Inability to stand or put pressure on foot
  • Pain and difficulty rotating ankle
  • Swelling or bruising

Mild ankle sprains can heal over a period of a few weeks. Mobility problems and joint restriction can be addressed by your Chiropractor and may require stretches and exercise to help regain flexibility and strength.
